Founded by Oscar award-winning actor Robert Redford, the Redford Center focuses on integrating activism, policy, scholarship and community leadership to improve our world with creative strategies for change. The “Art of Activism” award celebrates the work of extraordinary leaders who are making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Actress and Voto Latino founder Rosario Dawson hosted the award ceremony at the Kabuki Theater in San Francisco. Dawson discussed the motivations and strategies behind her efforts to fight for voter engagement and education, to support disaster relief and refugees, and to use her voice to battle poverty, violence, and AIDS. The evening’s program included a moderated, action-oriented discussion between Rosario, Redford Center Executive Director Lee Bycel, the audience, and the selected Art of Activism honorees.

Please click here to view a slideshow of the event.

Snapshots in Action

Actress & Event Host Rosario Dawson with Art of Activism honorees Martha Ryan & James Berk

HPP Founder & Executive Director Martha Ryan & Family

Actress Rosario Dawson & Redford Center Executive Director Lee Bycel

On May 22nd, over 350 revelers celebrated at HPP’s annual benefit Our House to commemorate our 20th anniversary, raising a record-breaking $187,000 for our families in need. The event included a surprise tribute to Founder & Executive Director Martha Ryan. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared May 22, 2010 “Martha Ryan Day” in the city. This was joined by a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and an honorary resolution from the California Legislature Assembly. Finally, the tribute was capped with a procession of 20 HPP staff members bearing “sparkling” cakes, representing the organization’s 20 years of ending childhood poverty. The event honored The San Francisco Foundation for giving birth to HPP and fostering our growth over the past twenty years and Tipping Point Community for investing most heavily in our future sustainability. Thank you so much to all of HPP’s supporters for celebrating our 20th anniversary with us!

Please click here to view all photos from the event.

Please click here to watch videos from the event.

Snapshots In Action

The San Francisco Foundation Interim CEO James Head is presented a special gift from HPP.

Tipping Point Community Founder & CEO Daniel Lurie speaks at the event.

HPP staff members line up for a special surprise procession of sparkling cakes to represent HPP's 20 years of ending childhood poverty.

From left to right: HPP Board Member Barry Lipman, Martha Ryan, James Head

From left to right: Susan Buchbinder (Director, HIV Research Section at SFDPH) and Barbara Kimport (Interim CEO, SF AIDS Foundation & HPP Board President)

Martha Ryan & Family

HPP Community Health Worker Lead Karla Ayala brings down the house with her speech.

From left to right: Mary Johnson, Halle Cane, Casey Cane, Brent Johnson, Becca Prowda, Daniel Lurie

Led by HPP’s childcare staff Jeaneth Palacios and Helen Neeley for the fifth year, children were treated to arts and crafts, interactive games and entertainment from Cirque du Soleil, a magic show, a pizza party, and of course some one-on one-time with Santa himself.

San Francisco Giants baseball player Barry Zito even stopped by to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.
In addition to the fun and excitement of a day on the field, children left with toys donated by Good Tidings Foundation and the Giants, as well as a $30 gift card to use in the team store.

Jeaneth and Helen enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with HPP families outside of 2500 18th St. “Everyone was happy to be there and leave their stress behind, including many fathers and uncles. It was about having fun and feeling like a family for a day. There was a lot of laughing,” Helen said.

For some clients, this party could not have come at a better time. Jeaneth was approached by a client who expressed sincere gratitude for the opportunity to attend. It had been a rough year for her after she found the courage to leave an abusive husband with her children. With the help of HPP, she found refuge at the Casa de las Madres domestic violence shelter. A regular at the Friday HPP Parent/Child playgroups, she was excited the childcare center and the SF Giants could offer an opportunity for her family to enjoy a celebratory day out.

A sampling of some of the generous neighbors that pitched in included Leah’s Pantry with their delicious and healthy snacks, AIMC (Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley), the Native American Health
Center and its dental care clinic, a bookmobile for children and adults from the San Francisco Public Library, the San Francisco Fire Department, and Volunteer Doula Program representatives from San Francisco General Hospital.

Thank you all for your generous support and efforts!

Photos courtesy of Marsha Guggenheim

On Aug. 6, HPP’s Wellness Center welcomed very special guest and expectant mother Jennifer Newsom, the wife of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, to celebrate our third baby shower of the year.

The event was a memorable experience to wrap up the eight weeks of prenatal classes and included festivities such as games, delicious food, and gifts.

“Everybody felt happy that Jennifer came and were very impressed that she spoke Spanish,” Wellness Coordinator Nancy Frappier said. “It meant a lot for the mothers and families that Jennifer took the time out of her day to visit the baby shower.”

In a very generous gesture, the City’s First Lady plans to ask guests at her own baby shower to donate to HPP instead of giving her a gift. This was the first baby shower for many of these new mothers and families. Also, more fathers participated in prenatal classes than in previous years and were given special certificates to recognize their efforts. Two grandmothers also participated and were noted for their presence as well.

The baby shower could not have turned out to be such a smashing hit without the help of volunteers and several organizations. The San Francisco Quilters Guild donated baby quilts for the 40 pregnant and new mothers as well as Jennifer Newsom, who exclaimed how perfect the quilt will be for her African-themed baby room. Stacy Denney from Barefoot & Pregnant and her friend Kelly Kockos organized diaper bags to be given away to the mothers. The Production Ladies also volunteered their time and efforts. Finally, Wellness Center volunteers Marissa Venn, Vanessa Evers, and Mia Short, amongst others, all contributed their hard work and creativity in pulling off a successful baby shower for all!
