HPP client Emily lived homeless on the Potrero Hill streets while using drugs. After discovering she was pregnant in May, Emily found her way to HPP and, as she glowingly declared, the experience proved to be a thankful one.
“If it weren’t for HPP, I wouldn’t have been able to be 100% drug-free and sober and look forward to having a healthy baby,” Emily said. “No one is judgmental, and this helps me want to stay clean and sober, because I know they are not looking down on me. I’ve made many friends here, and being able to meet other clean and sober people at HPP has been life-transforming.”
Emily was so touched by her time in the prenatal education classes that she created a handmade certificate of appreciation as a way to give back to HPP. It says:
Thank you Homeless Prenatal Program for your never-ending services to our community! Many thanks from your New Mothers of 2009. A short poem for you all:
Underneath your exterior,
Underneath your clothes,
Underneath your words,
A special person grows.
